Studio Playfair began as a body of research into monumentality: a study of Edinburgh's historical structures, classical ornamentation and design codes, shaped through a modern lens as embodiments of permanence, self-determination and the foundations we build within ourselves. 

Volute swirls and fluted columns form recurring Studio Playfair motifs, contrasting romantic lines with classical structure. Rooted in formal design practice, each creation is iterated and refined until it feels inevitable - distilled into a symbol of monumentality, to hold as your own.

Studio Playfair jewellery is designed, modelled and hand finished in Edinburgh.

We use 100% recycled precious metal in our creations and work closely with our UK casters to capture the excellence of British craftsmanship in each piece.

As a design-led studio, every part of a form is refined, from the inside of a piece to its edges, ends and fit against the body. Each creation is considered a monument in miniature, brought to life in precious metal.

Our slow, deliberate approach is inseparable from our ethical and sustainability values. We create in small numbers, with selected pieces made to order, allowing each creation to be individually finished by hand with the same care and deliberation with which it was designed.

Studio Playfair's precious metal forms are hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office. The Assay Office’s history traces back to 1457, when early regulation was introduced in Scotland to guarantee the purity of precious metals.

Each piece carries the Edinburgh Castle hallmark, a mark used since 1485 on pieces that have passed assay. These hallmarks certify precious metal standard alongside tradition, and we are proud to have each of our creations signed with these iconic marks of trust.
